Students plant 100 pine trees in Benguet with GMA Kapuso Foundation
Benguet is just one example of a province that experiences extreme weather events due to climate change. In July 2023, Typhoon Egay triggered landslides and unleashed flooding in Benguet, which damanged, among others, the famous La Trinidad Strawberry Farm.
A resident, Cristina Bekesan, said on "24 Oras," Wednesday, that there are not enough trees in the area.
"Napakalambot po kasi ng lupa tapos kulang ang puno. Kahit yung isang puno na ‘yan, malaki ang maitutulong niya para hindi gumuho ang lupa," she said.
Meanwhile, during the summer, heat and humidity can get overwhelming in Benguet due to the loss of trees. The province is also no stranger to forest fires and the damage these bring.
Recently, students from Dagadag Elementary School and their parents planted 100 pine trees in Mankayan, Benguet, under the Kapuso ng Kalikasan Project of GMA Kapuso Foundation.
The pine tree seedlings were provided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR CENRO) in Buguias.
Pine trees were chosen for the tree planting activity because these are endemic and thrive in Mankayan, per the report.
