Arturo Luz's granddaughter Paulina Sotto pens loving tribute to her lolo

Paulina Sotto has taken to social media to share a loving tribute to her lolo, National Artist Arturo Luz, who passed away Wednesday evening at the age of 94.

“I’ve always been a Lolo’s girl,” Paulina, who is also a painter, began in the caption of an Instagram post.

“My Lolo was my second dad, and he spoiled me rotten. I’m not sure words can properly describe our relationship, but it was truly special. We had such a strong bond, which only grew stronger when I unexpectedly followed in his footsteps as an artist,” she said.

“What a privilege it was to experience his love and generosity first hand,” Paulina continued.

Paulina wrote about some of her most cherished memories with her grandfather, including the times she would explore the National Artist’s studio as a child, "and if I showed interest in one of his paintings, he would simply say ‘You like it? It’s yours!’"

Paulina also recalled how Luz would even put his her childhood drawings on display in his studio.

“Imagine that—a National Artist whose studio wall was filled with random drawings and doodles by his young granddaughter,” she wrote.

“Those moments are now just memories, and it is devastating. But while the loss of a loved one is never easy, I find peace and happiness in knowing that I spent most of my life by his side.”

On her Instagram Stories, Paulina also posted several old photos with her grandparents and her mom, revealing their tight-knit relationship.

In one of her last IG Stories posts, the young artist narrated listening to a recent virtual meeting between her lolo's doctors and her mom and tita.

She recalled the doctors mentioning how Luz wasn't doing well, how he wasn't his usual jovial self. "Then out of nowhere, one of the doctors said (without knowing I was there listening), 'when I visited him, he became so happy when I brought up his granddaughter, the artist.'"

Paulina and her lolo were truly close.

Arturo Luz, who was named National Artist in 1997 for his significant contribution to the development of Philippine arts, passed away Wednesday evening at the age of 94.
