David Licauco looks back at car accident that killed his best friend: 'Medyo sinisi ko rin 'yung sarili ko'
David Licauco looked back at his near-death experience, a car accident where he lost his best friend.
In an interview on Karen Davila’s YouTube channel, David shared that he and his high school friends went on a trip to Tagaytay.
As they were leaving, David was in the passenger seat and the parking boy told him to wear his seatbelt.
David fell asleep on the way home. Later, their car hit a gas truck along SLEX.
“'Yung best friend ko, namatay siya,” David said. He added that his best friend was also his neighbor, that they grew up together, and that they enjoyed playing basketball.
At that point, David said he couldn’t think about anything but to go to the hospital and help out.
“I tried my best to parang help but I couldn’t even help anyone because like, I couldn’t even help myself,” he said.
Looking back, David said, “Medyo sinisi ko rin kasi 'yung sarili ko. What if I didn't sleep? What if sinamahan ko 'yung driver… na parang, pwede siyang maiwasan kung mas naging aware ako, mas naging wise ako in that situation.”
While David was bedridden, he became more appreciative of life.
“Mas minahal ko sarili ko, mas minahal ko 'yung friends ko, family, because you never know. Like, life is just lent to us,” he said.
The Pambansang Ginoo said that his survival was a miracle and that his faith in God grew stronger.
“I also thanked Him na meron pa kong purpose. Like, maybe kaya hindi pa ko kinuha ni Lord is because I still have a purpose in life.”
For David, that purpose is to be an inspiration.
“I’d like to think na I wanna serve as an inspiration to the youth, to the fans, and to my friends, to my family,” he said.
David is among the stars of GMA Network’s “Maria Clara at Ibarra,” which is now streaming on Netflix. —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA Integrated News
