Maxene Magalona expresses support, empathy for Filipinos ‘trapped in toxic marriages’
Maxene Magalona took to social media to give her two cents about toxic relationships and how they affect one’s mental health.
On Instagram, the actress and yoga instructor shared her thoughts about marriage and how as Catholics, “we take marriage very seriously and view it as a sacrament.”
“This is true,” she said. "Marriage IS supposed to be a sacred union between two people."
But Maxene pointed out the reality that some marriages turn out to be “toxic and traumatic” because “most humans have not done their individual work of healing their pain.”
"The marriage that is supposed to be a sacred union turns into a toxic and traumatic bond," she added.
According to the yoga instructor, a lot of married couples think having children will solve these issues but unresolved personal problems will only will only lead to a "vicious cycle [that] never ends."
"Letting go is medicine for the soul," Maxene said, adding she decided to air out her thoughts during Mental Health Awareness Month to show support and empathy “for all of the Filipinos who feel trapped in toxic marriages and can’t find a way out.”
“Being forced to stay in a relationship that diminishes your self-worth will make you think less and less of yourself until you don’t know yourself anymore,” she said.
In her post, Maxene expressed disappointment that our country is one of only two countries in the world that forbade divorce.
“In my humble opinion, divorce helps protect the sanctity of marriage by allowing the toxic marriages to dissolve and keeping the sacred ones intact,” she said.
“I sincerely pray for peace and progress for our nation,” she added. “We deserve divorce,” she said.
Earlier this month, the House of Representatives approved on final reading the proposed measure on absolute divorce.
Maxene married musician and yoga instructor Rob Mananquil in 2018.
In 2022, eagle-eyed netizens saw that Maxene no longer followed Rob on Instagram and dropped his surname.
In April, Maxene shared clips of her vacation in Siargao with her rumored boyfriend.
