PETA'S list of top 10 vegan desserts
A lot of popular desserts contain dairy products, like ice cream and cake. But for some people, dairy-free desserts are much more delightful.
"The demand for dairy-free desserts has never been greater," says the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, noting the intense suffering of cows and their calves—who are traumatically torn from their mothers shortly after birth—on dairy farms.
PETA says that vegans aren't the only people who find dairy-free desserts delightful. Those who are lactose-intolerant can definitely appreciate dishes sans milk and other dairy products, as well. Quoting studies from the Harvard School of Public Health, PETA says 90 percent of Filipinos are lactose-intolerant, and this on top of the suffering on dairy farms makes the case for consuming milk and other dairy products hard to swallow.
PETA suggests Oreos and recipes from cruelty-free food companies like Kitchen Revolution. Even popular commercial coffee shops like Starbucks have vegan options—frappes are okay if you order them with soy milk and without whipped cream. Soy cream is also available in local supermarkets for making your own creations.
For those who still have difficulty finding vegan treats, PETA has come out with a list of the top 10 vegan desserts in Metro Manila, and the sweet list has everything from cruelty-free cookies to sin-free sorbet.
"All our top 10 vegan desserts show just how delicious compassion can be," says PETA Asia Vice President Jason Baker. "And everyone wins: the diners who get to indulge in heavenly desserts and the animals who are spared suffering on cruel dairy farms."

Cookies to ice cream to cake
PETA'S list begins small, with Pipino's Chocolate Chip Cookie. They describe it as "simply the best cookie in town," but if that's not enough, the sunny restaurant in Teachers Village also offers vegan chocolate cake and green tea cupcakes.
Next on the list are Dark-Chocolate-Covered Strawberries, their pick from several dairy-free dark chocolate options at Chocolate Fire. "Be sure to try the soy mocha," they add.
For kids at heart, there's Coconut House's Coco Loco Dairy-Free Ice Cream, a luscious milk-free treat at the vegetarian-friendly Coconut House in Quezon Memorial Circle.
If you're a fan of combining chocolate with bananas, you may want to taste Heart2Hearth's Chocolate Banana Cupcake. PETA suggests visiting Heart2Hearth at the Salcedo Saturday Market and stocking up on treats for the whole week.
Craving something a little bit more Pinoy? Dr. Tam's Vegan House has a cruelty-free and healthier take on the traditional Filipino polvoron, which PETA says is the perfect treat to top off some of Dr. Tam's famous kare-kare.
The classic chocolate frosted cake is made even better at Corner Tree Café in Makati. PETA declares their scrumptious cake nirvana for chocolate lovers.
Chocolate lovers can also find comfort in Gelatissimo's Dark Chocolate Sorbet, or try other dairy-free flavors like strawberry, guava, raspberry and green apple.
If a cold drink is what you're after, there's Chimara Neo-Vegan Café's Strawberry Soy Ice Cream Milkshake or Starbucks' Dark Mocha Soy Frappuccino.
Last on the sweet list is something made using two Filipino favorites—mango and rice. People's Palace offers Mango Sticky Rice, a traditional Thai dessert made with sweet sticky rice, coconut cream, and ripe mangoes. –CGL/KG, GMA News
