Pinoy Colada or Pacquiao’s Punch? Search is on for ‘iconic’ cocktail for APEC leaders
By ANDREO CALONZO, GMA News
Will leaders from Asia-Pacific countries take a sip of “Pinoy Punch” or “Pacquiao’s Punch” when they gather in the Philippines this November?
Organizers of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit to be held in Manila later this year are looking for “a national cocktail or an iconic drink” to serve leaders of the forum’s 21 member-states.
The APEC Business Advisory Council of the Philippines launched the search at the World Presidents’ Organization annual membership night earlier this week, Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose told reporters in Malacañang on Wednesday.
“Invited chief executive officers and guests tried five types of rum-based cocktails and have each rated its quality based on aroma, taste and balance,” Jose said.
Among those who tried the cocktails were Ambassador Marciano Paynor and Ambassador Angie Santa Catalina and Ms. Doris Magsaysay-Ho—all members of the APEC National Organizing Committee.
Aside from tasting the cocktails, the participants were also asked to suggest names for the cocktail. Among the proposed names were Manila Thrilla, Pacquiao’s Punch, Pinoy Colada, Mango Tango, Pinoy Punch, and Jeepney Juice.
Jose said the results of the search will be announced at a later time.
