Seven no-nos of healthy eating, according to Solenn and Erwan Heussaff

Healthy living has been the standard in the Heussaff household.

At the 40th Milo Marathon held in SM Mall of Asia on July 31, the sibling tandem took part in the 10-kilometer run.

Both active in different kinds of fitness activities, it was no surprise that they finished the race with minimal struggle.

But when asked to give tips on healthy living, Solenn and Erwan gave major emphasis on healthy eating.

Solenn began, "I think he’s more healthy than me,"' referring to her brother.

Going back to the topic, she revealed the staples in her fridge, "If I’m not following a recipe book, in my fridge, you’ll always find chicken breast, fruits because I have juice every morning."

"Chocolate, avocado, I like the fat of avocado, coconut juice, Milo, mushrooms. That’s my standard grocery list."

Meanwhile, Erwan has more items in his fridge.

He said, "Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, garlic, mushrooms, avocado, tuna... Usually strip loins, tenderloins, whatever fresh fish I can find, almond milk, and celery, and beets, and ginger."

Now if you have been dieting or if you're planning to diet, Solenn and Erwan dished out seven no-nos:

1. No to processed foods

Make this your mantra: "Fresher the better."

Erwan underlined, 'I always tell people, the faster you can get food in your mouth from the ground or from the animal to your mouth, the better.

'Putting it through the least processes as much before you consume it and actually eat it.'

2. No to anything fried

If you're serious about eating right, say goodbye to fried chicken, French fries, to name a few.

Solenn added, "Don’t add too many additives. Let’s say if you’re gonna buy chicken, the healthiest to do it is if you just grill it or steam it."

3. No to sauce or seasoning

When eating grilled chicken, instance, Solenn suggested, "Don’t add the sauce and the thing and the this and the that."

4. No to eating out (as much as possible)

If your purpose is to eat healthy, don't be deceived by the 'healthy' alternatives in restaurants.

The Encantadia star said, "As much as you can eat at home so you know what’s being put into your food because even if you have salad in a restaurant, you really don’t know what you’ve added there."

Erwan added, "You know what oil they’re using, even if it’s healthy, which oil and vinegar, which is extremely healthy, but you don’t know what oil they are using. It could be palm, it could be vegetable or else that’s not good for you at all."

5. No to unhealthy meals

You really should learn how to cook.

The face of The Fat Kid Inside revealed how he makes his every-day meal.

"I eat the same thing every day. What I do literally is take a wok, olive oil, bucket loads of garlic, bucket load of gingers, bucket loads of vegetables, and then lots of protein. And that’s it."

In her upcoming book Hot Sos, Solenn will be sharing some of her recipes.

She said, "I came up with two recipes with Milo NutriUp na super easy to do at home and kakaiba, so I hope that people will try it out and give me their feedback because I invented it."

The book will be out this month.

6. No to crash diets

In every meal, Erwan would always keep this in mind: "I always use like, picture a diagram, a circle, then you’d have 25 percent of that would be protein, 15 percent of that would carbs, and then 10 percent of fat, and the rest of it would be vegetables and stuff like that."

So make sure your meals are proportioned accordingly to the nutrients you need every day.

7. No to any excuses

The common reason why some people are finding it hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle: it is expensive.

Erwan completely disagreed, "People just use that as an excuse because they’re like, ‘E, I want my steak, I want my pork lechon,’ and every thing. It’s actually the cheapest thing ever."

"I always tell people, if anyone wants to prove me wrong, come with me to any wet market or palengke in Makati or in Manila or even in the provinces. I can buy carrots and onions for something really cheap and I can buy any type of local fish."

He continued, "The really kind of cheap ones, that’s perfect nutrition, lots of protein, good fat, and then you eat that with cabbage with probably one of the cheapest or potatoes from Benguet which are really cheap. Cut those up and you’re good." Pep.ph
