Makati ranks 4th in PETA’s ‘Top 10 vegan-friendly cities in Asia’
Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Wednesday recognized Makati as one of the "Top 10 vegan-friendly cities in Asia."
Makati placed 4th on PETA's list, ranked behind Taipei, Taiwan (1st); Singapore (2nd); and Chiang Mai, Thailand (3rd).
"Makati's vegan cuisine covers every craving, from lechón kawali and isaw to doughnuts and cheesy quesadillas, all 100 percent meat-, egg-, and dairy-free," said PETA Vice President of International Campaigns Jason Baker in a statement released to the press.
He added: "PETA praises Manila's financial district for its cruelty-free fare, which satisfies diners, helps the environment, and prevents animals from suffering."
PETA cited Greenery Kitchen, Juicesabel, Wabi-Sabi, Green Bar, 101 Hawker Food House, Kismet Café, Charlie Does Manila, and Corner Tree Café as notable all-vegan haunts in Makati.
They write:
Its all-vegan restaurants include Greenery Kitchen, which serves meat-free traditional Pinoy dishes, from sisig and adobo to bopis and pares. Juicesabel prepares vegan cheeseburgers, mac ‘n’ cheese, longganisa, and dairy-free cakes, and nearby Wabi-Sabi ladles out a ramen with meatless meats alongside its famous “meaty” banh mi sandwich. Green Bar serves everything from vegan roast beef sandwiches and popcorn “chicken” tacos to dairy-free grilled cheese and doughnuts, and even 101 Hawker Food House offers veggie meat in the dishes in the vegan section of its menu. The Kismet Café now offers vegan cinnamon rolls and stacks of pancakes and waffles served with vegan butter and all the maple syrup you can ask for. Newcomer Charlie Does Manila pairs “fish” and “beef” tacos with local beers, and Corner Tree Café—a veteran of Makati’s vegan scene—has an extensive menu full of hearty plant-based dishes and desserts.
There’s even an Instagram account called Good Eats Asia featuring pictures of all the vegan-friendly items you can find in Makati’s restaurants.
Makati’s all-vegan enterprises offer vegan cheese, lechon, ice cream, cakes, cookies, and brownies for those looking for more options.
Also on the list are Bangalore, India (5th); Hong Kong (6th); Bangkok, Thailand (7th); Bali, Indonesia (8th); Ho Chí Minh’, Vietnam (9th); and Shanghai, China (10th). —ALG, GMA News
