Fantastic feast set for the third serving of Filipino Restaurant Week

The Philippine Consulate in New York is serving up a third helping of the Filipino Restaurant Week, bringing together 18 dining establishments from New York and New Jersey.

Consul General Theresa Dizon-De Vega during the launch on May 4 credited the pioneering chefs for the increase in interest in Filipino food. She also gave a nod to "second generation Filipino-American chefs and food enthusiasts" and the boost in social media in putting our cuisine on the map.

This year, Lumpia Shack Snack Bar, Swell Dive, Noodle Fan, Pinoy Filipino Restaurant, Calesa Restaurant, and Sisig Food Truck join 10 restaurants from the original lineup: Purple Yam, Maharlika, Jeepney, The Ugly Kitchen, Grill 21, Kuma Inn, Payag Restaurant, Tito Rad’s Grill & Restaurant, Phil-Am Kusina, and Max's Restaurant.

Cheryl Tiu writing for Forbes reported that this is the first time that non-Filipino restaurants are joining the festival: French brasserie Maison Hugo and modern Japanese restaurant Megu.

Maison is owned by French-Filipino couple Florian Hugo and Michelle Consing-Hugo and Megu is run by Filipino executive chef Frances Tariga-Weshnak.

They all take pride in the influence of Filipino cuisine in their signature dishes, with Consing-Hugo speaking particularly fondly of her mother's cooking.

"My mom used to make a fantastic camaron rebosado that I love to this day," she was quoted as saying. She and husband Florian will be serving ensaladang talong and sinanglay, plus leche flan in their booth.

These along with other dishes will be available at  $10 to $35, which according to Tiu is "a fraction of their usual prices."

Nicole Ponseca told Tiu that she hopes the movement spreads to other cities, adding, "Given the global interest in Filipino food, I think showing a united effort by our community of chefs, entrepreneurs and the consulate shows not only our food but our commitment as a powerhouse community."
