Sinigang in the Holy Land: Carinderia serves a taste of home to Filipinos in Israel

The taste of home comes in the form of sinigang mix in a sachet, and in the Holy Land, the flavor is made better by the experience of eating in a carinderia.

Together, Christina Dizon and Rogel Guzman staff a small eatery in Israel. The couple warmly welcome diners, some of whom don't have a kitchen to cook their own meals.

In an interview with Rhea Santos for Unang Hirit's feature on Holy Week in Israel, Rogel played down his role as the cook.

Asked how he realized his skills were good enough to put up his own eatery, Rogel said, "Ewan ko, kasi binabalikan naman araw-araw ... Sinubukan naming magluto, may mga nakatikim, nabalitaan nila...tapos lagi na sila dito."

For his customers, the dishes transport them back to our shores. "Parang kang nasa Pilipinas pa rin," one of the diners said.

Journalist Rhea Santos experienced this for herself, finding comfort in the bowl of soup after a long day of exploring the Holy Land. — Aya Tantiangco/LA, GMA News
