Ube cheese pandesal has invaded California to Chicago, thanks to this Filipina mom

Ube cheese pandesal has been the craze in the Philippines for some time now, but it seems that it has finally reached the shores of the United States.

Thanks to Eden Galuz, a Filipina based in San Diego, California, America has become acquainted to the beloved sweet-and-salty treat.

According to Bernadette Reyes' report on "24 Oras," Eden started baking amid the pandemic in order to bond with her husband and daughters.

"'Yun na ang naging way para mag-bake kami, para meron kaming pang merienda," she said.

When she let her friends have a taste, she had gotten positive reviews and began taking orders.

Now, Eden is earning $150 or P7,500 per day as Filipinos in the States and even Americans themselves cannot get enough of the ube cheese flavor. She even gets orders even from as far as Chicago!

So what's her secret ingredient?

"Pag nag-be-bake ka kailangan laging nasa puso mo 'yun para masarap ang lasa," she said.

Eden, whose job has been affected by the pandemic, said she frequently thinks of her humble roots in a small barrio in Mindoro.

It has become her inspiration to work harder and do what she can, even something as simple as baking pandesal with love, during the lockdown.

"Ang iniisip ko 'yung ayaw kong bumalik sa hirap ulit," she said. "Lalo na 'yung mga anak ko, ayaw kong iparanas sa kanila 'yung naranasan ko."  —MGP, GMA News
