The legendary chef of Ukkokei is back at it, this time partnering with Margarita Fores for Ramen Ron!
Nobody can talk about Metro Manila's ramen scene without mentioning Ukkokei, an unassuming little spot on Pasay Road in Maakti that commanded utmost attention and respect.
There was always a long line, with a strict unsmiling bald chef who sometimes threw people out of his restaurant. He could afford such attitude, too, because he offered such a delicious bowl of ramen.
So good were Ukkokei's ramen that it's considered among the pioneering joints that jumpstarted the ramen trend in Metro Manila.
Fastforward to the 2020 and Asia's best female chef of 2016, Margarita Fores brings the unsmiling chef back to the front.
On Instagram Monday, Fores announced that her latest venture, Ramen Ron, is going to be with her son and the aforementioned unsmiling chef, Takura-san.
"He never used to smile and I got thrown out once because I insisted on bringing my Diet Coke into the restaurant which he did not allow!" Fores wrote as she posted a photo of herself with her son Amado and Takura-san all smiling and enjoying their bowls of ramen.
"The iconic Chef Tamura-san who pioneered the ramen trend, is smiling now, moves on, and opens with us!" She adds excitedly.
Ramen Ron officially opens today, November 3, serving take-home take-home ramen kits.
Much like Ukkokei, Ramen Ron maintains a lean menu of just five items:
- Ukkokei Miso Chashu Ramen Kit 480
- Ukokkei Shoyu Chashu Ramen Kit 480
- Tantanmen Ramen Kit 480
- Hiyashi Goma Ramen Kit 470 (Cold Sesame Ramen)
- Frozen Gyoza 180 (5 pieces)
According to an Instagram post, each ramen kit is good for one serving and while it can be kept chilled for two days, is best consumed within the day of purchase.
You can have it delivered or you may pick it up from White Space Manila, Don Chino Roces Ave. Extension, Makati City.
And though Ramen Ron is all about take-home ramen kits, the new service still maintains operating hours (11am-6pm).
