Pinay named Female Chef of the Year at World Gourmet Awards

A Filipina has been named Female Chef of the Year at the World Gourmet Awards in Singapore.

Johanne Siy, head chef of Lolla restaurant at Ann Siang Hill in Singapore, was awarded for her exemplary “culinary skills.”

According to World Gourmet Awards, Siy excels “in both daily kitchen operations [and] setting high standards for excellence throughout her career.”

She was also described as “mindful, produce-driven and reflective” as she incorporated her upbringing in modern European fine dining in her own style.

With her years of experience in various kitchens, farms and forests, Siy had developed appreciation and respect for producers who gave importance to quality, said WGA.

“She champions positivity and knows that it takes passion to contribute to elevating hospitality as an industry overall,” it said.

Siy was trained by renowned culinary giants, including chefs Eric Ripert and Daniel Boulud at Le Bernardin and Andre Chiang at Restaurant Andre.

The Pinay chef traced her love and talent for food back to Dagupan where she grew up with Filipino comfort cuisine.

Inaugurated in 2001, the World Gourmet Awards recognizes efforts of key players in the hospitality industry who deliver best dining experiences and products to their guests.

Together with the Singapore Tourism Board, it aims to motivate talents in the culinary industry to excel in the profession and promote appreciation for fine dining in the region. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
