Chinese New Year: 6 restaurants with special set menus for a delicious celebration

Chinese New Year is upon us and what better way to celebrate than with food?

The Year of the Water Rabbit arrives on Jan. 22, Sunday, which means loads of special set menus and promos from some of Metro Manila's greatest Chinese haunts.

Here are some set menus and dishes to check out:

1. Jasmine at New World Makati Hotel

New World Makati's popular authentic Chinese restaurant, Jasmine, rings in the Chinese New Year with two set menus that signify prosperity, longevity and happiness.

Set Menu 1 (P10,888) starts with the salmon yu sheng salad, also known as the prosperity salad, followed by the braised abalone mushroom in crabmeat broth, wok-fried prawns in black pepper sauce, steamed fish fillet in superior sauce — a totally standout dish! — braised Chinese black mushroom with sea moss and kailan, and steamed rice with preserved sausage in lotus leaf.

The meal also comes with hot cream red bean soup and lotus seeds and glutinous rice dumpling with milk chocolate, and includes one box of nian gao.

Set Menu 2 (P13,888) meanwhile kicks off with a prosperity salad, along with braised assorted seafood in a fish maw broth, pan-fried tiger prawn in spicy bean sauce, steamed live garoupa in superior soy sauce, braised dried oyster with sea moss in premium oyster sauce, and stir-fried misua in ‘Fujian’ style.

This set also has two desserts: the double-boiled white fungus with lotus seeds and steamed piggy buns with milky egg cream and will also include one box of nian gao (rice cake).

Both sets are good for four guests and are available this weekend from January 20-22.

Just craving for some dimsum? You're in luck! Jasmine has on offer all-you-can-eat dimsum from xiao long bao (pork dumpling) and barbecued pork pastry puff to seafood taro puff and shrimp with bamboo shoot dumpling.

For reservations, you may call (02) 8-811-6888. New World is located on Esperanza Street corner Makati Avenue, Ayala Center, Makati City.

Set A (P12,388) includes an appetizer of 3 kinds of dimsum (shark's fin dumpling, vegetable dumpling, fried shrimp wonton), pumpkin and seafood thick soup, and mains, steamed tiger prawns with garlic, 1/2 roast duck, stewed pork ribs (emperor style), steamed lapu-lapu with garlic, steamed crab in egg white, and efu noodles (just your usual noodles made of egg and wheat) with seafood in truffle sauce, and mango buchi for dessert.

Set B (P14,388) serves up a steamed money bag with spring rolls for an appetizer, Chinese-style coconut chicken soup, radish with scallops and French beans on XO sauce, braised fish maw with sea moss and meatballs, steamed lapu-lapu with taoso, fried pigeon, steamed crab with garlic, and efu noodles with seafood in abalone sauce, and hot taro soup with sweet glutinous rice balls.

3. Crystal Dragon at City of Dreams

City of Dreams' Cantonese restaurant Crystal Dragon is putting a twist on the prosperity salad with a prosperity roasted duck instead of herring or salmon, as roasted duck symbolizes wealth, abundance, and fertility.

The salad comes with jellyfish, crispy vegetables, and plum dressing, which denotes a harmonious family relationship. The flour crisps meanwhile symbolize prosperity, as well.
