Turon, maruya, bitso-bitso and banana cue make it to Taste Atlas's list of 100 most popular deep-fried desserts in the world

Let's hear it for the almighty turon!

Several Filipino fried food made it to Taste Atlas's list of 100 most popular deep-fried desserts in the world with the favorite turon — fried saba in lumpia wrappers — leading the Filipino food contingent at no.13.

Cascaron or bitso-bitso, a delicacy usually doused in sugary syrups, is at no. 40, while maruya, which Taste Atlas describes as banana fritters "dusted with flour, battered, and then fried until crispy," comes in at no. 44.

Banana cue, saba coated in a thick layer of caramelized sugar, sits at no. 59 on the list.

According to Taste Atlas, turon falls in the category of "popular lumpia snacks," with the saba "sliced lengthwise, dusted in brown sugar, enclosed in wheat wrappers and then fried until golden and crispy."

Our beloved bitsu-bitsu meanwhile, the food website described as a "traditional treat is made with sweet glutinous rice flour, shredded coconut, and coconut milk."

Unsurprisingly, America's doughnut takes the no. 1 spot.

Spain's churros, China's breadsticks called youtiao, Austria's krapfen, aka the first-European style donut, and beignets, square-shaped pastries from France complete the top five.
