Sorsogon sets Guinness World Record for largest nut brittle
The Province of Sorsogon has successfully secured a new Guinness World Record title for achieving the largest nut brittle in the world.
According to Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Friday, over 200 volunteers came together at the Provincial Gymnasium of Sorsogon and utilized 1,400 kilos of pili nuts, which were supplied by local farmers.
Following several hours of cooking, the participants created a pili nut brittle measuring 144.16 square meters, which is roughly equivalent to the width of one-third of a basketball court.
“Ito po ay ang hakbang ng mga mamamayan ng Sorsogon para opisyal na makilala ang aming lalawigan bilang Pili Capital of the Philippines. For this record po na largest nut brittle in the world, wala ho itong record holder, so technically kami po ang nag-set ng Guinness World Record,” said Jerome Dio, Museo Sorsogon acting curator and organizer of the Guinness World Record Official Attempt.
Per Kuya Kim, the pili nut is a tropical tree native to the Philippines, which grows abundantly in the Bicol region and also in some parts of Visayas and Mindanao.
Though the shell of the pili is known to be very hard and difficult to break, the kernel inside is described as soft and buttery once it is cooked.
Pili nuts are a popular local ingredient often used for making desserts such as pili tart and pili nut brittle.
