What fruits to include on your Media Noche for a lucky, prosperous 2026

It has been a yearly tradition for Filipino households to include lucky food on their Media Noche spread to symbolize a lucky and prosperous year ahead.

For 2026, which is the Year of the Fire Horse, what fruits should you consider including on your Media Noche table?

According to Feng Shui consultant Johnson Chua on Tuesday’s episode of “Unang Hirit,” there is no such thing as an unlucky fruit.

“Ang prutas ay biyaya sa atin ‘yan from the heavens so every each one ay medyo may dalang swerte,” he said.

“Kasi may mga simbolo ang prutas para sa atin, especially para sa kasaganahan, para sa kabuhayan,” he added.

Since the Year of the Fire Horse is lacking in the water element, Johnson said it’s good to prepare juicy fruits for Media Noche, such as watermelon, pear, ponkan, and honeydew.

Aside from juicy fruits, the Feng Shui consultant said classic fruits such as apples, pineapples, and kiat-kiat are also good options to serve.

Apples symbolize peace and harmony, while pineapples symbolize that “buenas” is coming.

“There’s always a story of Pina Pinya, ‘yung maraming mata, so that means kung maraming mata, marami kang opportunity na pwedeng makita at pwede mo ma-attract ‘yan for the new year,” he said.

Meanwhile, kiat-kiat symbolizes prosperity, since it comes in bulk.

“Parang bulto bultong dumadating sa’yo, maraming dumadating sa’yo na buenas not only for money but good fortune din,” Johnson said.

Other lucky food items to serve on your Media Noche include kakanin (rice cakes), seafood, and green, leafy vegetables, among others. —Hermes Joy Tunac/JCB, GMA Integrated News
