Protecting your pets in times of flood and rain

The face of unconditional love and utter loyalty is often furry, bewhiskered, and adoring. Every pet owner knows this, and every pet owner also knows that in the same way that our pets protect us, we must protect them too.

In this time of heavy rains and surging floodwaters, animal groups are urging the public to take precautions to ensure that the four-legged members of their family are also safe.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia (PETA) offers the following advice:
  • If at all avoidable, never leave your animals behind to fend for themselves.
  • Never tie animals up or leave them caged or confined in any way, as they will be trapped and unable to flee rising floodwaters.
  • If your house has a second floor, ensure animals have access to that floor so they can escape rising flood waters.
  • If you’re able to evacuate with animals, place small animals in secure cages, and keep dogs leashed. Frightening sounds and unfamiliar surroundings may make them bolt. Take water and food bowls, your animals' favorite toys or blankets, a towel and enough food for at least a week.
  • Watch for other animals in need, including strays and animals who are left behind by neighbors.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society also posted an advisory on its Facebook page requesting that if people must evacuate, they evacuate with their pets.

"We advise people to monitor and heed the flood warnings of their [local government units]. If you are asked to evacuate, please evacuate with your pets and bring an emergency kit (dog/cat food, water, towel, leash, vaccination card). Or make arrangements for your pets with family, friends, or vets to get your pets to a safe, high, and dry area. Please monitor the news for other weather and flood updates," it said. — BM, GMA News
