Strange bedfellows: Site lists world’s most sexually satisfied nations

It's not often that Switzerland, China, Italy and Nigeria share space on the top of a list together.

But now here they are, named as among the 12 countries with the most sexually satisfied populations in the world—at least according to online news magazine AlterNet, which collated several studies that revealed which countries get the best lovin' and why.

“Countries that are more socially liberal and have relaxed attitudes toward sex tend to have lower rates of STDs, teen pregnancies and abortions, and much more satisfying sex lives in general. On the other hand, just belonging to a socially repressive culture doesn’t always equate with satisfaction or how often populations get down—take Russia, where 80 percent of the population has sex at least once a week,” read the article.

There appear to be no common denominators among these countries. While Switzerland can boast of its controversial sex education—which can begin as early as kindergarten—and the Greeks have been casually talking about sex since the Ancient World, there are also very conservative countries on this list, such as Nigeria, which has some of the world's most repressive anti-gay laws.

Iterestingly, half of the countries on the list are in Europe, while the other six each represent a different region: Mexico for North America, Brazil for South America, India for South Asia, Nigeria for Africa, Australia for Oceania and China for East Asia.

In no particular order, the countries on Alternet's most sexually satisfied list (with some of the reasons they made it to the list) are:

  • Switzerland - where 32 percent of sexually active people have had sex in public;
  • Spain - which also topped the list for the world's "best male lovers";
  • Italy - where "food and sex are inextricably linked";
  • Brazil - where, according to one stat, people on average have sex three times a week;
  • Greece - where they've talked explicitly about sex since ancient times;
  • The Netherlands - where the teen birth rate, HIV rate and abortion rate are relatively low;
  • Mexico - where they're open about sex education;
  • India - where they're big on prolonging the pleasure;
  • Australia - where 75 percent say they've had sex on the road;
  • Nigeria - where they take the longest time having sex (24 minutes), according to a Durex study;
  • Germany - where Germans rate their sexual performance as excellent despite also landing on the top of a list of "world's worst lovers"; and
  • China - where 70 percent of the world's sex toys are manufactured. — Vida Cruz/BM, GMA News
