Religious organization offers cataract surgery at fraction of usual cost – report

A religious foundation is making cataract surgery affordable to the poor at its hospital in Parañaque City, according to a report on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines' news site.

The Foundation of Our Lady of Peace Mission Inc. (FOLPMI) conducts cataract surgery for as low as P3,000—compared to the current rate of P40,000—for patients with Philhealth cards, said the report.

FOLMPI president Sr. Eva Fidela Maamo, who is also a surgeon, said that non-PhilHealth cardholders can still benefit from rates between P8,000 and P10,000.

She added that consultation for cataracts is free.

The CBCP said the affordable cataract surgery and free consultation at Our Lady of Peace Hospital is available to patients from "any part of the country, regardless of religious belief."

The report said the hospital also offers free consultations and cleft lip surgery to the poor, whether they have health cards or not. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
