Regarding diabetes: 4 things to keep in mind
Yes, fruits and rice are allowed but people with diabetes must know there is a limit. No, a plant-based diet won't curb the disease.
In an #AskAway session with GMA News, Dr. Jeremy Robles of the Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism mentioned a four-point advocacy of the PSEDM that the public should keep in mind:
1. Visit your doctor
Don't wait for symptoms before consulting with your doctor. Early diagnosis can help you manage the disease better and they're more than willing to help you be as healthy as possible.
2. Balanced diet
"[Ang] diet ay importante. Control dapat 'yong pagkain mo. Dapat 'yong rice, isang cup at dapat 'yong meals, fixed 'yong time," Robles said.
He also noted the importance of eating snacks to supplement the nutrients you get from your regular meals. You don't have to avoid eating, you just have to eat good food.
3. Exercise
Robles recommends 150 minutes of exercise per week, done every other day. There should be no more than two days without activity.
4. Medication
If you are already on medication, remember to take it regularly.
Genetics are a factor, but regular exercise and eating a balanced diet can help even patients who are already diabetic live a relatively normal and health life.
