How true is it that people over 30 cannot absorb calcium anymore?
In a recent episode of Pinoy MD, Dr. Rolando Balburias, an internist, clarified a question that’s long boggled many of us: How true is it that people over 30 years old cannot absorb calcium anymore?
According to Dr. Balburias, that’s not necessarily true.
There are many factors to absorption of calcium, Dr. Balburias explains.
For instance, the level of Vitamin K2 we have in our body. This is the vitamin that directs calcium where it needs to go. “If you’re deficient in Vitamin K2, it will affect calcium absorption,” he continues.
Another factor? Hormones, specifically estrogen. “When women reach the menopausal stage, the production of estrogen declines, which affects the ability of the body to absorb calcium.”
So even if it may seem like it’s about age — the good doctor admits the body undergoes a lot of change at age 35 — when it comes to calcium absorption, it’s really not.
"There are a lot of factors to it," he concludes. — LA, GMA News
