How are endometrial polyps treated?

Endometrial polyps, or growths attached to the inner walls of the uterus, can cause irregular or excessive menstrual bleeding. How are they treated?

In an episode of Pinoy MD, OB-Gynecologist Dr. Raul Quillamore said there is no medical management for it.

"'Pag nag-regla ang isang babae, malakas ang bleeding. Ang medical management diyan ay binibigay natin to control the bleeding. Pero hindi 'yun treatment para sa polyp," he clarified.

The only way to treat endometrial polyps is to remove them through either dilation and curettage or hysteroscopy.

"Raraspahin ka, which is a blind procedure actually. 'Pag niraspa 'yung isang babae na may polyp, hindi pa sigurado 'yan kung natanggal lahat. So pwede pang maulit," he said.

"'Pag hysteroscopy ibig sabihin 'yung sinisisilip sa loob, may scope na pinapasok doon sa uterus. Makikita doon ng gynecologist yung polyp, sinusungkit 'yun and then raraspahin siya," he added.

Quillamore said that a hysteroscopy would be a better option but not all gynecologists practice it and not all hospitals are equipped to perform it.
