5 things heavy drinkers should do this Christmas season

With Christmas parties pouring in, drinking sessions are happening more frequently.

But in an episode of Pinoy MD, hepatologist and endocrinologist Dr. Angela Salvaña reminded holiday party-goers that having one too many can dire effects on your body.

Unhealthy drinking can eventually lead to liver cirrhosis, a fatal disease associated with jaundice, vomiting, nausea, and excessive pain in the thighs or legs.

Salvaña also stresses: "The more alcohol you drink, the more the damage to your liver."

And so, here are just five things you can try in order to avoid excessive drinking this holiday season:

1. Know your limits

It's very important that one knows just how much alcohol is "too much" for his or her body.

It varies in men and women, and it depends on what kind of drink you're having. According to Pinoy MD, women on the average can drink one glass of beer, while men on the average can drink two.

"Mas mabilis ang break down ng alcohol sa mga lalake. Sa tiyan pa lang, nagbe-break down na," Salvaña said.

2. Enjoy a meal

If you're expecting a drinking session, help yourself to the food on the table.

Food in the stomach can affect the impact of alcohol on your body's system.

3. Don't drink too quickly

Try keeping your glass down for a while after going bottoms-up.

According to Pinoy MD, it's better to leave a certain amount of time between drinks.

4. Drink lots of water

Drinking water on party night is a no-brainer for those who don't want to get too drunk.

It also replenishes the body and keeps you hydrated for a long night.

5. Learn how to say no

Apart from the potential hangover the next day, having too much to drink guarantees some given effects like dizziness, vomiting or even minor memory loss.

Of course, for a healthy and safe holiday with loved ones, those diagnosed with alcohol-related diseases are recommended to quit drinking completely. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
