Why is my neck turning darker?

While the darkening of ones neck, and sometimes of the underarms and elbows even, are often thought of as a cosmetic concern, it may actually have something to do with a deeper health issue.

In a recent episode of Pinoy MD, Dr. Rolando Balburias said the darkening of the neck is often associated with being overweight.

The condition is called acanthuses nigrican, and it's often a sign of insulin resistance.

"Ang insulin resistance is the first manifestation you get before having fullblown diabetes," he said. "Dekada ang bibilangin bago magresulta sa diabetes."

Balburias advises for people to consult doctors and find out the cause for their insulin resistance and fix it. — LA, GMA News
