Here's how you should care for your dentures

Taking good care of your dentures is an essential part of keeping your oral health in check.

In an episode of "Pinoy MD," Philippine Dental Association (PDA) president Dr. Jose Angelo Militante said caring for dentures is just as important as caring for one's natural teeth.

One way of doing so is putting the dentures in a clear glass filled with water.

"The reason why we put it in crystal or fragile glass is for the dentures to not stick to the material. It will stick if the container is plastic," he said in Filipino.

"Glass is also more hygienic compared to plastic. We don't want bacteria," he added.

Militante said removing the dentures before sleeping is a must to let your mouth rest.

"You already use the dentures the whole day so you need to give your gums, teeth, and bones some rest for it to recover, at least," he said.

According to Militante, dentures are important for people who have already lost a tooth.

"We don't want people to have difficulties on eating. Second use is what we call aesthetics. We want to refurbish, rehabilitate, so at least, the person will still be sociable," he said.

Incomplete teeth may also cause infection so getting dentures as early as possible is recommended.

"The infection might spread on other parts of the head, the neck, and other parts of the body. Paired with comorbidities, it would complicate things more," he said.

Most importantly, dentist Dr. Paolo Baroma said going to fake dentists is a big no.

"First of all, their instruments aren't sterile so aside from coronavirus, you may get other bacteria and viruses from that setup that can be life-threatening," he said.
