What causes ‘maskne’ and how to prevent it

Now that face masks are a staple in everyone’s daily lives, some people have been experiencing getting acne or “maskne.”

According to dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez in an episode of “Pinoy MD,” heat, oil, and irritation may cause acne to build up on the face when using a mask.

“’Yung hot temperature, humidity doon sa area na ’yon dahil ito’y covered. Pangalawa, the sweat and oil production na nakukulob under the mask and of course, irritation from the mask itself,” she said.

“’Pag na-irritate ’yung skin, pwedeng mag-clog yung pores and mag-develop ito ng tagyawat,” she added.

[When the skin gets irritated, the pores can get clogged and develop pimples.]

One way to prevent or treat it is to try different kinds of masks like those made with fabric.

Marquez added that it would also be helpful to have an acne maintenance regimen like using a mild facial wash, toners, and moisturizers that fit your skin type.

On food, meanwhile, Marquez said it would be beneficial to avoid sugar and dairy.

She also suggested home remedies such as steaming, using garlic, and wearing a natural mask.
