Why does skin sag sometimes after losing weight and can we prevent that?

Everybody wants to lose weight but not everybody knows losing weight can also come with a price: Having to deal with loose, sagging skin.

Why do some people develop loose skin upon losing weight anyway?

According to a recent episode of Pinoy MD, loose skin is what happens when the skin's collagen and elastic fiber break apart.

"Kapag tao ay tumaba, yung fats sa ilclim ng balat, binabanat ang skin sa ibabaw. So nawawalan ng tibay yang skin and nagkakaroon ng afging," Dr. Jean Marquez explains.

"Ito ang modalas mangyari pagka tayo ay tumaba nang husto at biglang pumayat," she adds.

Below are three things you can do to prevent sagging skin, according to the doctor:

1. Apply moisturiser on your skin when you start attempting to lose weight. Moisturizers help with the skin's elasticity, thereby helping prevent loose, sagging skin.

2. Lose weight slowly. Don't turn to crash diets to lose weight quickly. This will help the already-stretched skin to acclimatize and go back to its old size.

3. Get into strength training. This will build muscles that will cushion the skin when it loses fat.

Of course, you can also try laser surgery to remove the sagging skin but that comes with a steeper price.

We suggest trying one of the three solutions first before anything else and remember: Losing weight is a marathon. It's better when you take longer than crashing and then gaining it all back again. — LA, GMA News
