Obesity is a chronic disease, not just a 'matakaw' and 'tamad' issue, doctor says

Obesity is a chronic disease, not just a 'matakaw' and 'tamad' issue, doctor says

Weight tends to be a sensitive issue, but there is a pressing need to discuss obesity these days.

As prevalence rates of obesity increases around the world, it is important to remember that obesity is not just an "aesthetic" issue, but a chronic disease.

"It's no longer just being matakaw and tamad. It's beyond that," said ManilaMed endocrinologist Dr. Mia Fojas during a World Obesity Day press conference on Friday.

"You will have impaired functioning, there are signs and symptoms, and it causes harm, or it adds to morbidities. Kung anong ibang sakit mo, it adds more complications," she added.

Among the diseases that could be worsened by obesity are cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, heart failure, and dyslipidemia.

It also increases sleep apnea progression, and it is associated with mental health problems.

The problem is made worse by the tendency of patients to delay seeking for professional help. By the time they consult, they are already suffering from obesity-related complications.

Fojas stressed that it is important for obese patients to seek help from medical professionals instead of attempting weight loss programs on their own. For many, diet and exercise are not enough.

Patients need to fully understand their condition, medical history, eating habits, activity level, and previous weight loss attempts first before acting accordingly. —JCB, GMA News
