Is it safe for women to have sex while pregnant?

With women having a high sex drive when they're pregnant, is it safe for them to have sex?

In an episode of "Pinoy MD," Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OB-GYN) Dr. Raul Quillamor said it is fine, but there are several conditions to watch out for.

"Kung ang isang babae ay [buntis], regardless of whatever month [she's in], kung mayroong complaint na nagsa-spotting, abnormal discharge or sumasakit puson niya nang madalas, pwede namang 'wag na muna makipagtalik sa mga araw na nararamdaman niya 'yon," he said.

("If a woman is pregnant, regardless of whatever month she's in, if she has complaints like spotting, abnormal discharge or cramps, avoid having sex on those days.")

"(If) during her previous pregnancy, mayroon siyang history ng preterm labor o threatened miscarriage, mas maganda na 'wag munang makipagtalik," he added.

("If during her previous pregnancy, she has history of preterm labor or threatened miscarriage, it's better to not have sex.")

According to psychiatrist Dr. Joan Mae Rifareal in a previous "Pinoy MD" episode, women have high sex drives when they're pregnant because of the hormone called estrogen.
