Is it true that first menstruation blood can result in clear skin?

It has long been a myth that first menstruation blood can prevent acne. Is it true and worth trying?

According to Katrina Son’s “Dapat Alam Mo” report Tuesday, among those who took a chance on this was 26-year-old Charise Valle.

“Grade 6 ako then noong nagkaroon na ako, sinabi ng lola ko na ‘try mo ipahid yung [dugo] sa mukha mo kasi para pagtanda mo, hindi ka magkakaro’n ng mga pimples,’” she said.

The young and impressionable Charise did as she was told, "kahit nakakadiri," she said.

"Nung na-try ko, gusto ko agad siyang hilamusan," she added.

Charise said it was all okay until she reached college, where her acne started appearing.

“Mahilig po ako sa mga skin care hanggang sa ayon, nagkaroon na po ako ng mga pimple,” she said. “As in sobrang daming pimple sa pisngi ko.”

Another was 22-year-old Terriese Jalapandan who carried the “practice” from her relatives.

“Tatalon ka sa hagdan tatlong beses tapos yung first mens mo, ‘yon yung ipapahid mo siya sa face mo kasi raw nakakawala, hindi ka raw magkakatigyawat,” she said.

According to Terriese, she was so curious about it that she decided to try it. “Una muna, winash yung underwear tapos ‘yon yung pinahid sa mukha na may konting sabon,” she said.

Terriese said she did not have lots of acne and it would just come in one or two bumps at a time.

Even though Terriese and Charise had different experiences, dermatologist Dr. Krissy Jamora said the belief isn’t true as it hasn’t been scientifically proven.

“Most likely, the reason why the girl improves skin after her first period really is a genetic process. First menstruation is mostly blood products and discarded waste from the uterus,” she said.

Jamora added that although it’s not bad to believe myths, cleanliness is still the first thing to follow in keeping skin healthy. She also gave tips on how to deal with acne.

“It’s important na before tayo gumawa ng pamahiin sa ating balat, we check the facts first kasi it can produce more harm than good if you’re going to do something irritating to your skin.”

“Huwag tirisin yung pimples. Make sure na you wash your hands before washing your face. Regular washing of the face is also important but don’t over wash, avoid natin yung mga scrubs.”

So there you have it folks. Sorry to everybody's lola but wiping blood from first menstruation on your face won't exempt you from acne. — LA, GMA News
