What is a sound bath and how can it help you relax and de-stress?

Running on fumes and feeling the need to unplug and detach from our digitally connected world for a few moments? Consider giving a sound bath a try.

Sound bath is a kind of therapy that involves being surrounded by various sound waves through different instruments. Much like taking a bath has you immersing yourself in water, a sound bath is simply immersing yourself in the vibrations of sound. In case it sounds a little woowoo, consider its history.

According to the New York Times, sound baths go way back to ancient times and indigenous cultures and have been used as part of religious ceremonies and prayer.

At Lazada's LazRun launch held last week, Yoga certified teacher Jo Andaya said sound baths are ideal after every workout, so your body and mind return to a relaxed state through various tools, such as singing bowls, gongs, tang drums, and chimes, among others.

The vibrations from these instruments help clear the mind and reduce body tension after an intense workout session.

"When you cool down, sometimes that's the most challenging part," Jo tells GMA News Online. "Either you feel fidgety or [experiencing] high energy from your workout, but it's just as important to take time to restore and recover."

Aside from relaxation, a sound bath promotes deepening mindfulness by being present or "in the moment" while focusing on the vibrations produced by an instrument. This can help improve concentration, productivity and promote a sense of inner calm.

"With sound bath, I find that through practice, it can help my students focus their attention and be more present, and in the process, it helps them relax," Jo said.

"Some people love working out as an outlet to release stress. Others prefer high-intensity classes, while some prefer low-intensity, breathing classes, or guided meditation. Whatever it is that helps you relax, by any means, do so," she added.

Whether you want to improve your mental clarity, reduce anxiety, or unwind after a long day, a sound bath can provide a rejuvenating experience that can benefit both the mind and body. — LA, GMA Integrated News
