What can you do to prevent hair damage caused by summer heat? Hairstylist answers

Generally, our hair is resilient and can withstand any type of weather. Even so, you shouldn't ignore taking care of your crowning glory, especially during the summer season in the Philippines.

Just like in our skin, the summer heat can have various adverse effects on our tresses, such as dryness, frizziness, split ends and breakage.

According to Filipino hairstylist Renz Pangilinan, whose portfolio includes Heart Evangelista, Liza Soberano, and Kylie Verzosa, the only way to prevent sun damage to the hair is to use hair tools and products that support the hair's health.

"Do as many things that don't damage your hair," Renz told GMA News Online. "The hair is like our skin. The more we take care of it, the healthier it will be."

Renz was the guest hairstylist during the launch of Dyson's new innovative hair tool, the Dyson Airstrait.

It's a hair straightener that uses high-pressure airflow instead of hot plates to straighten hair as it dries. This modern wet-to-dry hair tool supports hair's health by avoiding heat damage caused by hot plates used in traditional hair dryers and hair straighteners.

"This changes the game because many of my clients are straight out of the shower," Renz said.

"The Airstrait cuts down the process of blow drying and straightening the hair in just one hair tool," he added. "All you have to do is style the hair after if you still need to."

The hairstylist also said that it's always helpful to use heat protectants on the hair if you're using hair tools to style your locks, especially in the summer.

Heat protectants are haircare products that prevent damage caused by heat-styling tools such as flat irons, curling irons, and hair dryers. It's advisable to be applied evenly on the hair before using heat styling devices.

Among the best heat protectant recommendations available in the Philippines include the Davines OI All in One Milk: Multi-Benefit Beauty Treatment and the Kérastase Genesis Anti Hair-Fall Fortifying Blow-Dry Fluid.

Meanwhile, when using Airstrait, Renz said that "the finer the hair, the less pressure you need" to style the hair.

"You might want to start with the lowest setting, then gradually increase it if you need to, so that's how you maintain healthy and smoother hair," he said.

In February, Dyson named Jisoo of Blackpink as its latest ambassador.

Earlier this year, celebrity stylist Mark Anthony Rosales said 2024 is the year of healthy hair, so if there's a perfect time to invest in hair care tools, this is the year to do so.
