Kara David opens up on bipolar disorder: 'It's my superpower'

Kara David opened up about her mental health condition on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” on Wednesday.

The multi-awarded Kapuso journalist said managing her bipolar disorder involves accepting it and seeking the right help.

“It’s a gift, it’s not a curse. It’s a condition, it is called a disorder, but in my case, because I’ve learned to accept my condition and asked for help from doctors, and explained it to my family, I actually view it as a gift. It’s my superpower," she said in Filipino.

Kara explained that the bipolar condition has two phases. There is the depressive phase, while the manic phase is what she said makes her creative and productive.

“Actually, when I’m at that somehow high point, I can think fast. I write scripts fast. I’m bolder, I’m braver to do things. But you need to manage it, so you won’t reach the very manic point where you crash.”

Kara also shared that managing mental health conditions cannot be done alone and that professional help is needed.

“Hopefully, the community does not see us as crazy, loka-loka, krung-krung, things like that. Because if you learn to accept your condition, you can make it work for you, not against you," she said.

Kara has always been open about her bipolar condition. In an interview on the "Updated with Nelson Canlas" podcast, she had shared that she manages her condition by joining marathons and triathlons.

Kara recently won three awards at the first-ever FAMAS Broadcast Awards, including Best Documentary for "Embalsamador De Motor" on "I-Witness,” Best Public Affairs Talk Show, and Best Host for Public Service both for "I-Listen."

Aside from being a top journalist and documentarist, she is also one of Filipino internet's favorite personalities. She has been dubbed the "Queen of Potential Sound" for her reactions and witty dialogues on TikTok. —Nika Roque/CDC, GMA News
