A rescue dog, Che-che, has a big smile ready for when her furmom calls her name.

Her demeanor is a far cry when she was first rescued from a resort in Samboan town, Cebu last month.

Minerva Gerodias related to GMA News Online that Che-che was one of the puppies her family found during vacation last August 27 and 28, 2026.

It was time for family bonding with cousins arriving from Manila and the U.S., and there were scrumptious meals prepared for them.

The puppies approached them, because there was so much food, and started begging but they were also scared and would keep a distance from the group.

Nevertheless, they decided to adopt the puppies but had a difficult time getting close to them.

"So ako gihimo kay nagbutang ko 2 ka food bowls, ako gibutangan lami nga food in a collapsible cage, nisulod sila kay gutom lagi tawn," Gerodias related.

(So what I did is to put 2 food bowls, I put delicious food in a collapsible cage. They entered the cage because they were hungry.)

Gerodias then brought the strays to her house to care for them but it took some time before they would go near her.

Then, it was only recently that after the pups warmed up to them that Che-che began displaying her winning smile.

"Karon na nadiscover namo nga mag ingon ana diay sya mo smile kun tawgon sa iyang name kay di naman sya hadlokan. Naanad na sya sa balay sa ako cousin," said Gerodias.

(Now this is when we've discovered that she'll smile like that when you call her name because she's no longer scared. She got used to being at my cousin's house.)

Gerodias has been rescuing stay animals for 10 years and she is currently furmom with the support of her family to about 60 cats and 50 dogs. — BAP, GMA News
