Kenneth Cobonpue has a Star Wars collection and it's all sorts of cool

The force is with us: Kenneth Cobonpue’s new Star Wars collection is a fan’s ultimate fantasy that came to life Wednesday night at the Cebu designer’s Makati showroom.

The project’s seeds were planted at a meeting among Disney’s top regional bosses where they were asked to present the best designers to collaborate with. Most of the executives present were impressed when Disney Company Philippines' representatives brought up a familiar name: Kenneth Cobonpue.

But when presented with the offer, Cobonpue was initially hesitant. The designer wasn’t interested with producing replicas. Instead, he wanted the creative freedom to express the spirit of the characters through his own unique vocabulary.

Disney’s top honchos said yes, and the rest is intergalactic history.

Star Wars fans will definitely not be disappointed with a range leaving them spoilt for choice, starting with a family of chairs inspired by the movie’s iconic forms and characters as reimagined by a creative team headed by Cobonpue himself.

Most of the guests delighted in the inaugural collaborative series. But there’s more to come. There is a series of dolls – Princess Leia with Luke Skywalker, an irresistible abstraction of Yoda with green ears, Star Wars’ king of Darkness, Darth Vader, among them – that will drop in November of this year.
