Face your family reunions with some flavorful responses

Between pouring time and effort into achieving personal fulfillment and working your way to living your dream are the dreaded family reunions. While you do love them to death and enjoy spending time with them, especially during the holiday season, some of their questions and comments can be a touch too personal and intrusive. Keep the peace this holiday season! Skip the eye-rolling and try making a quip that can silence your all too inquisitive relatives.

#1 Ang laki mo na!

• Oo nga po e, buti na lang hindi ako lumiit!
• Opo, medyo naparami ang inom ng vitamins!
• Naku, manang-mana lang sa inyo!

#2 Tignan mo si [name of brother or sister], (and proceeds to compare your achievements)

• Buti na lang masaya ako.
• Ugh, he/she’s such a failure. (jokingly)
• I’m so proud of him/her talaga.

#3 Bakit single ka pa? May girlfriend/boyfriend ka na ba?

• 'Di pa po ako ready.
• Strict po parents ko e.
• Namimili pa po ako. Tita naman, ‘di pwedeng basta-basta.

#4 May trabaho ka na ba? Ano bang future plans mo?

• Secret. Abangan niyo na lang ang pasabog ko.
• Open-minded po ba kayo? May business venture ako…
• Naku, wala pa! Tutulungan niyo po ako?! Ang sweet niyo talaga!

#5 Tumataba ka.

• Pinaghirapan ko po yan! Ang mahal na po ng bilihin ngayon ha.
• Naku, ganun talaga, gustung-gusto ko po kayong gulatin e!
• Muscles po yan.

No matter what remarks you may receive during your family reunion, just remember that you can quell the tension and awkwardness with some sweetness. “Mag beer na lang po tayo,” could be the best way to evade the questions.

Offer them a bottle and make a toast! Or find a spot away from the interrogating elders and relax with some San Miguel Flavored Beer with your cousins.
