Gollum actor Andy Serkis to read 'The Hobbit' live for charity

Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, will be marathon reading JRR Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit" live online to raise funds for charity.

According to the British actor, the 12-hour "Hobbitathon" will be taking place on Friday, May 8 at 10 a.m. GMT.

In a video he uploaded on Twitter, Serkis said the money collected from the live reading session is going to health workers of the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and another charity called Best Beginnings.

“So join me if you can at 10 am. Friday May 8th for an adventure,” he said.

"The Hobbit," which was published 1937, is about the adventures of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins in Tolkien’s richly-imagined world of Middle Earth.

In the movie adaptations of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of The Rings," Serkis portrays the creature Gollum who used to be a hobbit known as Smeagol.
