San Juan to launch pop-up bike lanes as Metro Manila transitions to GCQ

San Juan City will set up pop-up a bike lane as Metro Manila transitions to the general community quarantine (GCQ).

In a Facebook post, Mayor Francis Zamora shared a map of the planned route, with Phase 1 starting from N. Domingo to Ortigas Avenue before the intersection of Connecticut.

The route passes through key institutions such San Juan Medical Center, the San Juan City Hall, Greenhills Shopping Center, and near Cardinal Santos Medical Center.

"The city government deems it necessary to provide more mobility options to the public given the uncertainties brought by this pandemic," Zamora said.

Public transportation had been suspended under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) due to the threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Under the GCQ, public transportation has resumed limited operations, but only at half capacity to allow for social distancing among passengers.

The Department of Transportation previously said two-wheel vehicles such as bikes have an important role for commuters under the "new normal."

"It also is a sustainable and environment-friendly mode of transportation that promotes an active lifestyle," Zamora said.

The San Juan bike lane will be launched on Wednesday, June 3, in celebration of the World Bicycle Day. —MGP, GMA News
