After Janina San Miguel, Sophia Señoron reveals she also endured harassment as beauty queen

Miss Multinational 2017 Sophia Señoron revealed that she also endured harassment during her career as a beauty queen.

In Nelson Canlas' report for "24 Oras," Sophia opened up on her own experience of the dark side of pageants, taking the cue from Binibining Pilipinas 2008 Janina San Miguel.

Janina earlier told Channel News Asia that she was offered P25 million in exchange for a relationship and P3 milion for a one-night stand.

"The biggest thing I was offered was bahay, condo, car, everything," Sophia shared. "Ang makapal pa 'yung mukha is hindi pa sa akin diniretso, sa nanay ko."

She said it's "disgusting" that women are "considered as an object" and believes that they should be protected within the pageant industry.

"People just think that women are easy targets. And it's a terrible, terrible narrative. No matter where you are in the world, ganun 'yung perspective," she said.

Sophia said dealing with harassment is difficult especially on top of the pressures of competing itself.

"If you feel unsafe... mag-iiba ka talaga. You'll walk away from your dream which might be the most heartbreaking thing," she said.

Janina, who resigned as the Philippines' representative to the Miss World 2008 pageant, bared anew that she even got feelers for a possible marriage.

"Sabi niya sa akin, 'Huwag ka na lang mag-aral, mag-asawa ka na lang,' sabi niyang ganun," she said. "So parang nag-o-offer ng marriage, ganun."

Arnold Vegafria, national director of Miss World Philippines, said they are taking measures to ensure their contestants are safe from harassment.

"Everywhere they go, they're always with chaperones," he said. "And some of them, especially the young ones, ni-re-require ko 'yung family nila or 'yung parents nila to be present there."

For Janina, however, she wouldn't want her children to take their chances.

"Kung magkakaanak ako, hindi ko na papa-join ng pageant kasi baka mapahamak pa, hindi kayang dalhin 'yung ganoong industriya," she said. —MGP, GMA News
