Marketing specialist becomes fish vendor amid community quarantine

A couple has turned to selling fish online to earn income amid the coronavirus diseaes 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to Bernadette Reyes' report for "24 Oras," Kharla Brazil was a marketing specialist selling motorcycles, while her husband Monico was a driver.

When the community quarantine disrupted the economy, they had to think of an alternative way to make some livelihood.

"Lahat po [ng pera] palabas, walang pumapasok kasi 'no work, no pay' kami," Kharla said. "Sabi po ng asawa ko, what if kaya mag-negosyo tayo?"

Monico suggested selling fish, as he had some experience peddling them before.

And so their business began: they would wake up at 2 am and head to a market in Malabon to buy fish, which they would resell at their small stall in Caloocan by daybreak.

Kharla then used her skills as a marketing specialist, such as handling social media, to sell the fish online. She would deliver the orders, while Monico would man their stall.

She is now earning P40,000 per month, doubling her salary as an employee. She has resigned from her job and is now focusing on the fish business.

"Wag po kayo matakot na mag-take ng risk in doing business," she advised others who may be thinking about other ways or earning income. "Isipin po natin 'yung positive thing na makakatulong po na maka-survive sa pang araw-araw."

"Maging matatag lang tayo anumang pagsubok. Dasal lang tapos tiyaga," Monico added. —MGP, GMA News
