Ben&Ben seeks justice for mother, son slain by cop through chilling song

Filipino band Ben&Ben has released a new song that calls for justice for the mother and son who were mercilessly slain by a cop in Tarlac.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Miguel and Paolo Benjamin, the lead vocalists of the band, sang the chilling and haunting song “Kapangyarihan,” where they narrated the injustices dealt by the very people who swore to serve and protect.

In a 3-minute video, the two singers sang the song containing the lyrics, “Huwag niyong tapakan ang katarungan / Akala niyo ba, ang kapangyarihan ay nasa inyo? Sino ba kayo? / Magwawagi ang katotohanan / Ang kadiliman ay ibabagsak.”

It also included verses such as, “Nagsisilbi ka dapat / Nagsisilbi ka dapat / Ibon na may layang lumipad / di mo na makukulong.”

In a Twitter post, the band used the hashtags #StopTheKillingsPH #JusticeForGregorioFamily and #EndPoliceBrutalityNow and condemned the murder of Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank by police officer Jonel Nuezca.

They shared that the band members decided to speak up amid the injustices faced by the people at the hands of those in power.

The incident, they said, was not an isolated case but “one of the many documented and undocumented abuse committed by the very people who have sworn to protect our lives and uphold our rights.”

“Know that Ben&Ben commits to stand up for the truth, and to fight your battles with you whenever there is a silencing of truth through oppression, injustice, and abuse. May you allow us to join you in these times,” they said.

Sharing that they’re choosing to speak up because of the “great absence and denial of truth in our society.”

Ben&Ben added: “We are choosing to speak this truth, through our account. We want you to know that it is each of the individual band member themselves, Paolo, Miguel, Andrew, Poch, Jam, Pat, Agnes, Keifer, Toni speaking, and not the band management nor any entity designed to protect the band.”

The members said they were simply artists but they wanted to use their platform to encourage everyone to do something.

“Let’s all help amplify the cry of the people: swift justice to be served to all the mercilessly killed victims and their families,” they said.

“Hindi man lahat ay sabay-sabay na namamulat, hindi po huli ang lahat para tayo ay magkaisa para sa katotohanan, tunay na pagbabago at kapayapaan.”

On Sunday, Parañaque City police officer Nuezca was caught on video shooting Sonya, 52, and Frank, 25, to death in Paniqui, Tarlac in broad daylight.

Nuezca has since surrendered himself and has been indicted with double murder. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
