Electrical safety tips for your home

Childproofing one's home has become even more essential these days as with kids continue to stay put at home.

This includes padding corners, putting barriers on staircases and perhaps most importantly, keeping electrical accidents at bay.

In Wednesday’s episode of “Unang Hirit,” a safety specialist shared some tips on how to keep your home safe from electrical accidents.

According to Engr. Larry King, outlets like extensions should be out of reach from children.

“[Iwasan] natin na mahawakan nila o may maisaksak sila do’n na kahit anong bagay na conductor. Pwede rin natin ilagay sa likuran ng mga upuan,” he said.

“Kung ang ating appliances ay ‘di naman kailangan na nasa baba yung outlet, pwede itaas para mas madali rin yung access (for adults),” he added.

For existing sockets located on walls, food containers can be used as a cover so children won’t be able to get their hands on it.

“Tabasan lang in the size of (the) [socket] and then lagyan ng small opening para sa mga wiring. Pwede rin gumamit ng cable hoses para maiwasan na na-e-expose yung wire sa mga bata,” he said.

He added that sockets and extensions with guards can now be bought in hardware stores, so parents should consider it when they have kids running around their homes.

Wires, like sockets, shouldn’t be kept exposed. It should have flexible hoses or plastic moldings that will protect anyone.

Lastly, appliances’ wires should be pulled out from the socket whenever it is no longer in use to avoid future problems.
