5 things you need to know about Netflix's upcoming fantasy epic 'Shadow and Bone'

Netflix’s new fantasy series “Shadow and Bone” is finally premiering this April 23.

The story follows outcast mapmaker Alina Starkov, who unleashes an extraordinary power that could threaten the fate of her war-torn world.

Before you press play, here are five things you should know about the upcoming eight-episode series.

1. It’s based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling fantasy novels

“Shadow and Bone” breathes life to a series of bestselling books written by Leigh Bardugo.

The show will introduce you to a world known as the “Grishaverse” where you’ll meet witches, spies and a whole lot of magic.

You'll travel to a dark, war-torn world where a lowly soldier and orphan named Alina Starkov displays an extraordinary power.

2. It features a diverse cast

Alina Starkov is brought to life by half-English, half-Chinese actress Jessie Mei Li.

The cast also includes Archie Renaux as Alina’s best friend Mal Oretsev, Amita Suman as the spy Inej, and Sujaya Dasgupta as the grisha Zoya.

Kit Young, on the other hand, is playing a cheeky, queer sharpshooter named Kaz Brekker.

3. It has multiple love stories

Apart from the magical story and exceptional characters, “Shadow and Bone” might just draw you in with some romance.

Get ready to be dazzled by not one but many ships that you’ll want to see sailing throughout the show.

4. There are tons of hot guys

Alina shares an extremely strong bond with her best friend Mal Oretsev played by English actor and model Archie Renaux.

She also meets a mysterious and charming character named General Kirigan played by none other than “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” star Ben Barnes.

If that isn’t enough, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for Freddy Carter who plays Kaz Brekker, Calahan Skogman who plays Matthias Helvar and Kit Young who plays Jesper Fahey.

5. It has a deliciously dark story

As fans of the books will know, Bardugo created a magical world inspired by tsarist Russia with its own magical lore.

The fictional country of Ravka is burdened by a nearly impenetrable swath of darkness called the “Shadow Fold.”

Alina also embarks on a perilous journey where she has to defeat dark magic, and people with even darker intentions.
