Tom Hiddleston confirms Loki is genderfluid: 'It's always been there'

An old Marvel theory just got confirmed: Loki is genderfluid!

On Twitter, the official account of the upcoming series revolving around the God of Mischief released a teaser ahead of its release.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted a detail when Loki's file was thrown on screen — his gender was indicated to be "fluid" instead of the standard "male" or '"female."

In an interview with Inverse, actor Tom Hiddleston confirmed this fact.

"It's always been there in the comics for some time and in the history of the character for hundreds, if not thousands of years," he said.

"Breadth and range of identity contained in the character has been emphasized and is something I was always aware of when I was first cast 10 years ago," he added. "I know it was important to Kate Herron and Michael Waldron and to the whole team. And we were very aware, this is something we felt responsible for."

"Loki" head writer Michael Waldron meanwhile expressed pride and eagerness as he spoke about this reveal.

“I know how many people identify with Loki in particular and are eager for that representation, especially with this character,” he was quoted as saying. "We worked really hard."

In Norse mythology, Loki is known for his shapeshifting ability. That aspect of his character was also adapted in the Marvel Comics.

This means that Loki can turn into either man or woman at will.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character has been consistently portrayed to be in male form by Hiddleston. —JCB, GMA News
