Woman who sold chicharon and mani to put herself through school graduates college

A 25-year-old was able to fund her studies and graduate college by selling chicharon and mani in school.

According to Katrina Son’s “24 Oras Weekend” report on Sunday, Jemaima Joy Salas had to find ways to support herself after her parents separated and then after her grandmother, who was helping her, passed away in 2014.

“I started selling nuts until I added chicharon so I can support myself because we have limited money and I have no one else but myself,” she said in Filipino.

Jemaima said she sold the snacks during break time and dismissal. Fortunately, she had schoolmates who were supportive of her small business.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in entrepreneurship at the Laguna University and now serves as an inspiration to other students.

"Selling in school was a big help to me because it really supported me with my studies," she said.

To students who also wish to finish their studies, Jemaima said giving up is not an option.

“You will encounter lots of obstacles but this is not a hindrance to reach your dreams. I was once in your place, scared to reach my goals, but I didn’t let it stop me,” she said.

Proud of what she has achieved, Jemaima is all smiles in her graduation photo, posing with the food that helped her get through.
