Lego figures dancing Singkil take center stage in Denmark

Lego figures dancing the Singkil recently took center stage at the Philippine Embassy in Denmark.

According to JP Soriano’s “24 Oras” report Friday, the Lego showcase was part of the program during the 75th anniversary of the bilateral relations of Denmark and the Philippines held in Copenhagen.

The Lego Singkil art was created by Lee Magpili, a senior model designer for The Lego Group in The Netherlands.

Magpili, who was born in the Philippines and raised in New York, was also a cultural dancer who had performed the traditional Filipino dance in the past.

“I’m super proud to be able to do it and mixing the different types of passions that I have in my life, from Filipino dancing, Lego of course, and being able to represent it from here for others,” said Magpili.

The detailed installation showed the original Lego bricks positioned as characters in the dance, with matching costume and props made from customized materials designed by Magpili, such as fans, bamboo poles, and swords.

He also used robotics and monitors connected to a computer application to control the movements of the figures.

“We plan to have this creation or installation showcased in a lot of Copenhagen museums and institutions,” said Ambassador Leo Herrera-Lim, adding many people there were amazed with the talent of Filipinos.

He said they also planned to exhibit the Lego showcase in schools to instill “sense of pride” in Filipinos in the area and for them to appreciate the artistry of Magpili. – RC, GMA News
