Here are some easy tips to avoid firework burns, house fires this New Year

The Bureau of Fire Protection has shared a few tips to help the public avoid fire-related emergencies in their upcoming New Year celebrations.

In an interview on "Unang Hirit," BFP spokesperson F/Supt. Annalee Carbahal-Atienza advised viewers to safely enjoy community firework displays instead of buying and using fireworks or firecrackers at home.

Atienza also reminded those who chose the latter to purchase products only from licensed sellers and manufacturers.

To prevent blisters and burns, Atienza said one should always have a bucket of water on standby.

When it comes to defective fireworks or firecrackers, one should keep their distance and avoid picking it up immediately with their hands. Atienza advised dousing it with water after waiting a few minutes.

More importantly, adults must keep kids at a safe distance from fireworks and firecrackers at all times.

Because New Year celebrations often involved gatherings with a large feast, Atienza reminded the public to switch off the gas in case of a kitchen fire. In the event of a grease fire or food bursting into flames, one could put it out by placing a damp cloth over the container.

However, if the fire is electrical or caused by faulty electrical outlets and appliances, one must never use water to put it out. Instead, one must immediately switch off the power and call the nearest fire station.
