K-pop hits 230% growth in listenership, 8 billion monthly streams–Spotify
K-pop has hit 230% growth in listenership and 8 billion monthly streams from all over the world, according to Spotify.
In a press release, Spotify said the genre had definitely taken over the music streaming platform, as shown by the over 4.7 million searches for “K-Pop” in the last 90 days.
It’s no secret then that K-pop has been taking over the whole world—and Spotify has known that since 2014, when it launched its “K-Pop Daebak” playlist.
Today, Spotify is relaunching “K-Pop Daebak” as “K-Pop ON!” as it aims make fans’ listening experience even more enjoyable.
“We aim to further elevate the experience for K-Pop fans, and become a catalyst for promoting both emerging and established K-Pop (artists) across the globe, connecting fans in authentic and creative ways,” said Kossy Ng, Spotify Asia head of music.
According to Spotify, “on” in Hangul means “‘100” or “whole,” and “K-Pop ON!” embodies the idea that “K-Pop is always on 100 for the whole world.”
The playlist features music from both established and upcoming artists, including BTS, Aespa, BTOB, Enhypen, NMIXX, STAYC, Super Junior, Taeyeon, Treasure, and Twice, among other K-pop acts.
As part of the relaunch, larger than life billboards of the biggest K-Pop artists such as BTS, Blackpink, NCT Dream, Red Velvet, and Seventeen will be displayed all over the country.
Since its debut, the playlist now called “K-Pop ON!” has received over 3.5 million likes. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
