Fancy a new hair color this summer? Try the foilyage technique for sun-kissed locks

As someone who is very adventurous with hair colors, I tried several coloring techniques in the past, such as balayage, ombré highlights, lowlights, and even do-it-yourself hair dye at home. But there's a new hair color technique that I've heard a lot of, and I just have to try it myself to see what the buzz is all about—it's called "Foilyage."

Coloring the hair using the foilyage technique gives a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow to the hair, which appeals more during the summer season.

The process begins with certain sections of the hair—usually where light would naturally hit the hair (on the top and front)—wrapped in foil after the hairdresser hand-paints the color formula to the hair. The foil is essential so the product would be absorbed deeper into the hair's fiber.

Unlike the traditional foiling method in the hair from roots to ends for a consistent hair color pattern, the foilyage process allows hair to be softer on the roots and lighter in the ends so the hair would look natural when it grows out. This is the main reason why I wanted to try foilyage. When my hair eventually grows, I wouldn't have to keep retouching my roots. How low maintenance!

I went to Culture Salon in Bonifacio Global City to check if they would achieve my "redhead" dream using the foilyage technique.

After choosing the shade of red I wanted, the process of foilyage began.

My hairdresser prepared the color formula and foils before sectioning my hair. I was surprised that he didn't need to bleach my hair anymore to achieve the red I wanted, as he didn't want to damage my hair further.

The process of applying the color to my hair, including the foiling, took almost 30 to 40 minutes then I had to wait for another 30 minutes to let the products get absorbed by my hair.

It was not foul-smelling compared to the other hair color products I tried before. It also didn't sting my scalp in the process, unlike my previous hair coloring experiences.

After the 30-minute downtime, I got my hair rinsed to see the outcome.

After blow-drying, this was how my hair turned out— a very subtle hint of red only attainable using the foilyage technique. In the dark, it doesn't look like my hair has a touch of red strokes, but the dimension is pretty amazing under broad daylight. True to the foilyage promise, my hair looks sun-kissed and natural.

If you prefer a rather subtle hair color rather than flashy and loud, you should definitely try the foilyage technique on your hair.

The foilyage hair color treatment at Culture Salon ranges from P3500 to P9000.
